Interdisciplinary studies is art. It is the process of creating meaning utilizing a wide range of 'materials,' and in many different potential ways. The materials might be more abstract than paint, paper, and pencil, but things like knowledge, and practices gained from multiple areas of study, contribute to creating a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. In making art, it is often best to work from general to specific, a rough sketch becomes a more developed structure, and ultimately a fully rendered image. The same is true when interdisciplinary 'art' is developed from a general understanding of various different areas of study. Crafting meaning, and communicating new messages in different forms, is an important part of interdisciplinary practice, as well as art. Works of art are often very unique to artists themselves, and there is that same underlying complexity inherent in interdisciplinary studies. Unique experiences and educational background can combine to create something great! Interdisciplinary studies takes many different forms, and communicates meaning that is as unique as the interdisciplinarians that create it.
